Easy On The Eyes

Easy On The Eyes

There are three simple ways to practise Ayurvedic eye care. These are through rest, nourishment, and gentle eye treatments.

Easy On The Eyes

The eyes really are windows to within. These delicate organs not only convey a person’s emotions, but also their inner health. Ayurveda explains that the Pitta dosha, which embodies the elements light and fire, governs the eyes. In particular relation to the eyes is the sub-dosha Alochaka Pitta, which is easily imbalanced by the aging process. This can manifest in deterioration of the eyes, such as impaired vision.

The eyes deserve to be cared for, even when your are in perfect health. In fact, Ayurvedic practice focuses not only on mending imbalances, but on maintaining good health to prevent future problems. There are three simple ways to practise Ayurvedic eye care. These are through rest, nourishment, and gentle eye treatments.

Rest

An imbalance in Pitta can result in eye concerns such as dry eyes, eye strain, and crow’s feet. Resting the eyes through several methods can help to balance Pitta. Foremost, ensure sleep is restful and long enough. Rest allows the brain and eyes to recharge and re-hydrate through natural processes. During the day, ensure regular breaks from screens and bright light are taken. Blink periodically and try palming exercises during these breaks. To palm the eyes, rub palms together for a few moments and gently place them over the eyes. Block out as much light as possible and allow the eyes to relax into the darkness. In addition to these methods of resting of the eyes, relaxing yoga asanas are ideal for reducing stress and brain fatigue, which also affect the eyes.

Nourishment

Puffy eyes are a result of a disturbed Kapha dosha, which embodies the elements earth and water. Attending to nourishment is the best way to calm the disturbance. For general good health, drink plenty of water at room temperature. Herbal teas can also be soothing to Kapha. Antioxidants like vitamins A, C, E and lutein are important for counteracting the free radicals produced by sunlight. For the benefits of these vitamins try to regularly eat:

  • nuts
  • corn
  • broccoli
  • spinach
  • carrots
  • pumpkin
  • papaya

For optimum eye health, it’s also recommended to reduce or avoid intake of ice-cold drinks, alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks.

Gentle eye treatments

Dark circles and tired eyes are caused by either an imbalance in Vata, governed by air and wind, or Pitta. Effective treatments to improve these conditions include:

  • placing cotton pads soaked in milk over closed eyes for 15 minutes
  • splashing the face and closed eyes with cool water several times
  • mixing a little room temperature ghee and water in an eye cup and place over each eye for five minutes

The application of eye cream rich in amazing actives to achieve needle free results with natural collagen & elastin fillers is also an effective treatment.
